Veteran honored with quilt
Chronicle guest column CAROL EVERMAN Mar 23, 2019 Updated Apr 2, 2019

Members of VFW Post 1909, Columbia River VFW Auxiliary and Beaver Valley Grange #306 joined on Friday March 15th to present a quilt honoring the service of John G. “Gil” Curtis, a veteran of the Korean conflict.

The groups also wish to recognize the service of both Gil and his wife Harriet to the community over their many years of life in Rainier.

Gil and Harriet moved to a farm in rural Rainier 60 years ago, to raise their family and grow hay and cattle. Gil made a living as a postal carrier and Harriet taught and tutored many local children through the years. They have been involved in the Catholic church and both are life members of Beaver Valley Grange.

They are no longer as active as they wish; the farm is run by their children. At 90, Gil doesn’t get around well, but three years ago he and his wife were able to travel to New Orleans to attend a reunion of his unit, California National Guard 40th Division.

The quilt, created by Kaye Smith, is a pattern called “Via Airmail.”

While inspired by Quilts of Valor Foundation, the organizations have presented this recognition independently.
